Kasey Price's

​For her final Master's thesis, Kasey decided to complete a creative recording project and a paper analysis. Because she was studying 70s and modern R&B music production, she produced two projects exploring the differences and similarities between the two techniques.

Kasey recorded three different songs (“We Can”, “Cruise With Me”, and “Chicken Pox”) and produced two different versions of each in order to represent 70s and modern R&B production.​ "We Can" and "Cruise With Me" are two original songs while "Chicken Pox" is a Booker T. & the MG's cover.

Kasey explored 70s music production through recording and mixing her entire project using only analog equipment. For her modern production, she used mostly digital devices. The lead vocals of the modern version of "We Can" was recorded with analog compressors and an analog console.

Kasey chose to produce her project in Memphis, TN. She decided upon Memphis because of its rich R&B history and its facilities. In order to capture the "Memphis Sound", she recorded at two original homes of Memphis music, Royal Studios and Stax Music Academy.

Kasey completed her 70s project at Royal Studios and the majority of her modern production was recorded at the Stax Music Academy. The appeal of Royal Studios is that it has essentially remained the same since its creation. According to Kasey, it was the best place to recreate 70s magic.

Recording at the Stax Music Academy was a slightly different experience. Originally, the site of the academy was home to Stax Records. Although the look and equipment has changed, the soul is still there. Kasey saw recording at Stax Music Academy as a perfect way to bring the past and the future together. 

Creating a project of this caliber did not go without its challenges, but in the end Kasey was able to complete it and most importantly have fun. The music from Kasey's thesis project is available for playback in the music player located on this page.
